SPLICE

A TYPEFACE FOUND IN HUMAN PROTEIN STRUCTURES

MFA GRAPHIC DESIGN THESIS / RESEARCH / 2026

Today, we are more disconnected from our bodies than ever. Generative AI flattens visual culture; politics attack scientific research. Splice responds by encoding language in molecular structures that already exist inside us all. This operates under the radical idea that scientific data doesn’t always have to feel institutional. It’s personal. It belongs to you.

Splice is a 3D typeface in which every character is a real human protein structure sourced from AlphaFold, an open-source database of computationally predicted molecular models. Each glyph was found using pareidolia as a formal methodology: rotating protein models until legible letterforms emerged. Discovered, not designed.

The centerpiece is a mechanical keyboard on a plinth. A screensaver cycles four phrases in the protein typeface: This alphabet is made of you. Your body cannot be erased. Now it is your turn to say something. What are you going to say? A visitor can type anything. Each character renders in real time as a rotating 3D protein molecule. The phrase is simultaneously sonified: amino acids are mapped to musical tones, so a unique ambient chord is generated for every input.

Three floor-length strips of sheer chiffon printed with protein letterforms hang in the space, responding to movement and touch. Four 3D-printed resin protein sculptures spelling B-O-D-Y are mounted to a mirror, so viewers can see themselves reflected behind the molecules. The interface is set in Computer Modern, designed via Knuth's Metafont, a typeface built from mathematical parameters rather than drawn by hand, echoing Splice’s methodology.

The human body has been translated into language. What are you going to say?

VISIT SPLICE-TYPE.COM

ABYSSAL FEST / IDENTITY + APPAREL / 2025

Abyssal Fest is an experimental electronic music festival that uses thalassophobia as protest. Musicians and marine scientists collaborate to call for more ocean exploration and environmental protection. The visual language pulls from 1) the hypnotic, violent beauty of bioluminescent lures of ocean creatures and 2) deep-sea spectrograms, visual records of a sea that screams. These sounds may not survive the century. </image:caption>

EXHIBITION IDENTITY

SUBTEXT / IDENTITY + APPAREL / 2026

For the 2026 Otis MFA Graphic Design Exhibition, I designed a complete identity system: branding, promotional posters, a screenprinted shirt, outdoor signage, digital promotion, and a large-scale balloon sculpture. The concept asks viewers to read between the lines. I developed a halftone system in Vectoraster where distortions and obstructions invite closer inspection, and grounded the color palette in the act of highlighting itself: yellow for analog reading, blue for digital.

Subtext lies beneath every act of communication: ideas that are unspoken, rewarding those who linger and investigate. There is always more than what first appears. The Otis College MFA Graphic Design class of 2026 has spent two years learning to work in that space, between what’s said and what’s meant. Researching, questioning, making, unmaking. Each designer engages with questions that define this moment. So look closer. Read deeper. The work here shifts the longer you stay with it. So stay with it.</image:caption>

STATIONERY PRODUCTS

HELLOCROW PAPER CO. / IDENTITY + APPAREL / 2026

As a designer, I’ve always been drawn to the quiet magic of shared moments. The way a table can set the tone for a conversation. The way paper goods and objects become tiny archives of the memories we keep. Like the crows that inspired Hellocrow, I’m a collector at heart. I gather materials, textures, colors, and ideas, curating them into Gathering Kits and Trinkets that bring people together. Every product is designed with intention.

Each Gathering Kit is a curated set of paper goods and décor that work together to create a cohesive atmosphere for your celebration. You choose the theme and select what you need. Then we gather the pieces!

The Trinkets line is a collection of stationery products and jewelry for bringing some whimsy and joy into your life. I like to keep it cute and spunky. I can’t decide if I’m funny or not, though. You tell me?
GIVING TUESDAY CAMPAIGN

GIRLS GROUP / ADVERTISING / 2025

The mission of Girls Group is to empower young women to achieve emotional and economic self-sufficiency by ensuring they graduate from high school and begin their college or career journeys.

For GivingTuesday, I designed a full campaign that was deployed across web, digital, and social platforms. As the sole designer for this nonprofit, I manage the website, social media, and email newsletters, along with designing all print collateral. This paper cut-out effect captures the lighthearted joy of participants and staff members. </image:caption>

WHAT IS QUEER TYPE?

RESEARCH / WEB ARCHIVE / 2025

This archive holds most of my queer design research, inspired by Paul Soulellis’s essay, “What is queer typography?” (2021). You can sort the images by dragging them, clicking the sort button to snap them to pre-determined categories: writing, history, archive, performance, publication, and typefaces, or double-clicking opens a window for more details and sources. The idea is that queer typography means something different to each person, so I’m presenting a canvas for each user to construct a new narrative.
